PHEMC ENGAGES MUSLIM LEADERSHIP ON ALARMING COVID CASES

The Municipal Public Health Emergency Management Committee (MPHEMC) of the Wenchi Municipal Assembly has held a meeting with leadership of the Muslim Community in Wenchi.

The meeting was to among other things discuss the alarming rate of the high number of deaths and positive cases from 2nd and 3rd waves of the novel Coronavirus which has technically been identified by the Ghana Health Service as the Delta Variant. As at 30th July, 2021, 130 positive cases were recorded from 650 samples with 7 deaths. Others at the Treatment Center for medical attention.

The engagement follows the resolution of the Committee to embark on joint public sensitization campaign on the new Coronavirus dimension and adherence and enforcement of the laid down protocols.

In his remarks, the Municipal Director for Health Service Robert Kwaku Bio appealed to the Muslim Community to adhere religiously to the protocols to stop the spread of the disease. He notes that the current COVID wave is much faster and harder than what was experienced last year, thus the need to collectively fight the menace.

The Municipal Officer for Environmental Health & Sanitation Ms Gertrude Lanseni explained how COVID related deaths (bodies) are handled for burial. She cautioned families against interference with duties of Environmental Health Officers in handling COVID bodies to avoid further spread and deaths, indicating that there are strict protocols for disposal of a COVID infected body.

The Municipal Information Officer Stanick Sofel Amuzu Kpodo outlined the activity strategies adopted to carry out the education campaign to reach out to the public.

The Municipal Police Commander DSP Eric Avudzivi indicated the readiness of the Service to enforce and ensure adherence to the protocols especially during burials/funerals, and other occasions of gathering. He hinted that the Police would visit public places such as markets, lorry stations, streets, to ensure adherence and effect arrest.

The Daafi Imam Alhaji Suwari who chaired the meeting on behalf of the Chief Imam assured that the message on COVID would be continuously announced, particularly face masks and physical distancing at the Mosques.
