The Ministry of Local Government & Rural Development (MLGRD) in collaboration with the Institute of Local Government Studies (ILGS) has organized an Orientation and Training Workshop for the members of the 1st Session of the 8th Assembly of the Wenchi Municipal Assembly.
The two-day capacity building programme was to amongst other objectives; introduce the newly constituted Members to their new and emerging leadership roles and the implications for local level development, equip them with skills necessary for effective job performance and personal conduct, expose them to local governance system, challenges and opportunities in their expected duties. It was also to equip them with the requisite competences to be more responsive to create an enabling environment for local economic development including revenue mobilization and inclusiveness. The workshop would also afford Assembly Members an opportunity to build networks and mutually-shared experiences with best practices for accelerated development. This would help set the agenda and reach consensus for expediting action on Ghana’s decentralization programme.
In an address delivered on his behalf by the Coordinating Director Edward Abazing, the Municipal Chief Executive Dr Prince Kwakye Afriyie emphasized the call for proactive and innovative mechanisms for revenue mobilization to accelerate development in the Municipality. He reminded Assembly Members of their roles and the functions of the Assembly as stipulated in the Local Governance Act 2016 (Act 936), hence, the need for the workshop.
At the end of the workshop, Assembly Members were taken through Leadership & Governance practices, key functions of the Assembly and Sub-structures, Accountability, Assessment/Evaluation Tool, amongst others.
Some Assembly Members expressed their satisfaction on the impact of the workshop.
