AGRIC DEPARTMENT EMBARKS ON AFFORESTATION PROGRAMME

The Agric Department of the Wenchi Municipal Assembly in collaboration with the Forest Research Institute has distributed over 6, 000 tree seedlings to farmers at Nchiraa and Subinso No 2 to embark on afforestation.

This is part of the enhanced programmes of the Assembly to rebuild, protect and conserve the existing forest reserves. The afforestation programme would serve as wind breaks and protect the environment and crops from destruction. Farmers were given orientation on activities and practices that lead to forest depletion, land degradation and environmental destruction. They were urged to do tree plantations and also plant the trees on their crop farms to protect their farmlands and communities. The species include Cahew, Mahogany, Framo, Emire, amongst others.

In his remarks, the Officer in charge of Crops John Osei Gyimah of the Agric Department advised farmers to adhere to best farming practices so as to increase yield and harvest. He urged them to always visit the Agric Office and engage the services of Agric Extension Assistants for orientation on best agriculture practices.

The beneficiary farmers expressed appreciation to the Agric Department and the Research Institute for the programme. They said the programme had given them a lot of insight in tree plantation and its importance.
