The Wenchi Municipal Assembly on Monday, 3rd December 2018, observed International Day of Disabled Persons at its forcourt. The annual observance of the International Day of Disabled Persons was proclaimed in 1992, by the United Nations General Assembly resolution 47/3.
The theme for this year’s celebration focused on empowering persons with disabilities for an inclusive, equitable and sustainable development as part of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development which pledges to “leave no one behind”.
This year’s celebration was aimed at promoting the rights and well-being of persons with disabilities in all spheres of society and to increase awareness that disability is not inability. In his speech, Hon. Dr. Prince Kwakye Afriyie, the Municipal Chief Executive reaffirmed his commitment towards empowering persons with disabilities within the Municipality. He said, to ensure inclusiveness in decision making process his outfit will work towards the appointment of persons with disability to the next Assembly.
The Hon. Municipal Chief Executive presented cash donation in the form of scholarships and income generation equipments like Deep Freezers, Overlock Machines, Hand Sewing Machines, Industrial Sewing Machine, Fufu Pounding Machines, Plastic Chairs, Set of Carpentry Tools, Water pumping Machine and Welding Machine to Seventy (70) persons with disabilities to empower them economically.Hon.Afriyie edged beneficiaries to use the funds and equipment for its intended purpose.
On their part, the Leadership of the association of Physically Challenged Persons’ thanked the government, through the Assembly for the kind gesture. They promised to use the donations for its intended purpose.
