WENCHI MUNICIPAL ASSEMBLY INAUGURATES NEW ASSEMBLY MEMBERS

The Wenchi Municipal Assembly has inaugurated the newly Elected and Appointed Assembly Members for the next Session of the Wenchi Municipal Assembly.
There were 29 Elected Assembly Members and 12 Government Appointees sworn in by the High Court Judge of Wenchi Her Ladyship Justice Mariam Saleh Sinare. They took the Oath of Office and the Oath of Secrecy.
In his Opening Address, the Municipal Chief Executive Hon Alexander Obour Damoah congratulated the Assembly Members and wished all contestants better luck next time, stating that even though some lost the Elections, a number of them had been re-elected which meant that the Assembly still has a good number of old and experienced members who would share their rich worth of experience with the new members. He charged the Assembly Members to live up to their responsibilities as the election of Assembly Members was a mark of confidence reposed by the electorates. He further charged them to serve their people to improve the living standards and make them part of the decision making process and governance at the local level. The role of an Assembly Member includes explaining policies to the understanding of the people in the participatory democracy. He charged them to be cooperative with the Assembly and accountable to their people. The MCE commended the Electoral Commission for the successful conduct of the Elections held on Tuesday 19th December 2023 to produce the current Assembly Members
Delivering the Inaugural Address, the Attorney General & Minister for Justice Hon Godfred Yeboah Dame, on behalf of the President of the Republic His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo reminded the Assembly Members of their mandate to harness and mobilise resources, deliberate and make decisions including Bye-laws to transform the Municipality. He entreated them to build good working relationships, collaborate with the local structures such as Urban, Town Zonal and Area Councils, Unit Committees, Traditional Authorities and identifiable groups to facilitate the work of the Assembly. He charged the Assembly Members to help mobilise Internally Generated Fund (IGF) revenue, incorporate and advance the implementation of the Government’s Coordinated Programme of Economic and Social Development Policies. He called for Capacity Building Training for Assembly Members and Public Sensitization of citizens. He also charged the Assembly Members to help enforce planning standard guideline compliance of Land Use Spacial Planning Act 2016 (Act 925) to tackle unplanned, uncoordinated and haphazard physical development within the Municipality. He stressed the need to hold Town Hall Meetings, Community Durbars, and other forms of Public Engagements to enhance good governance through active citizen participation.
